Earning a Graduate Degree in the Arts
Return to Archive

Earning a graduate degree will give you many benefits, including access to higher levels of employment and higher income potential. Earning a master's degree or doctorate in the arts—a vast heading that includes communication, fine arts, humanities, and languages—can give you a variety of career options.

You ability to enter an “arts” graduate school may depend on what you majored in as an undergraduate; for example, a business major is not likely to have the foundational knowledge to enter graduate school as a Spanish major. It is perfectly fine to enter graduate school to pursue a new career path, but you may have to take some prerequisite classes to meet admission requirements.

Many people choose to pursue graduate degrees so that they can conduct research or teach their subject of interest at the college level. If this is something you're interested in, consider these majors and potential career paths:

Communication

As a graduate communication major you can specialize in advertising, journalism, public relations, publishing, or professional writing. A graduate degree in these fields will help advance you into management roles and can open the door to teaching positions.

Fine Arts

Within the realm of fine arts you can major in areas such as art, art education, art history, painting, photography, and sculpture. Concentrating on skills areas such as painting, photography, and sculpture can hone your artistic skills for a career as an exhibiting artist. If you choose to major in art education you can teach art classes at the secondary school and collegiate levels.

Humanities

As a humanities major you can choose to study anthropology, archaeology, political science, psychology, or sociology, as well as numerous other social sciences. With a graduate humanities degree you can conduct research (anthropology, archaeology, sociology, etc.) or teach at the collegiate level.

Languages

Languages majors generally focus on a specific language; they may also study the history of the country the language originated in to help them better understand the language. Graduate study in a specific language can prepare you to teach the language to high school or college students.
