Scholarships and financial aid
Many UK institutions, the UK government and some charitable organisations will help talented international students with their study costs. Financial aid may take the form of free accommodation, a cash contribution or a reduction in fees. However, competition for scholarships is fierce.

If you are thinking of applying for financial aid you should do so at least a year in advance of the start of your course. It will not be possible to arrange financial support when you are already in the UK. You will need to prove that you have enough money to cover the course you are planning to take before you arrive in the country.

Who to contact

  • begin with your own ministry or department of education
  • if you are applying for an award offered by a UK body, contact your local British Council office, British Embassy or High Commission - they can advise you on scholarships from international organisations, voluntary organisations and EU schemes
  • contact UK institutions directly for details of their own award schemes. Your local British Council office can provide details of awards available, including those offered by UK institutions. You'll also find information and a scholarships database at http://www.britishcouncil.org/.
