The Job Market

Careers in engineering, science, technology, health care, medicine, nursing, and education are experiencing growth in many areas of the Northeast. Here are some hot spots in the region:

New York City is a hub for filmmaking, fashion design, publishing, theater, art, technology, and a number of other exciting industries. According to the New York State Department of Labor, jobs projecting the fastest growth through 2008 are computer engineers, computer support specialists, dental hygienists, medical scientists, and systems analysts.

Boston, Massachusetts, generates more jobs than residents, with more than 375,000 commuters entering the city each day to work. The Boston Redevelopment Authority predicts that by the year 2006, professional and business services, health care, financial services, education, and hotels will be key to Boston's job growth. Some of the largest employers in Boston are Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston University, and Fidelity Investments.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a historic city with a diverse population of more than six million people in the metropolitan area. Health care is big business in the city: four medical schools, two dental schools, two pharmacy schools, and pharmaceutical firms and biomedical research facilities reside in Philadelphia. A few of the fastest-growing jobs requiring a bachelor's degree in the state of Philadelphia are special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, and biomedical engineers.

Washington, DC, is the seat of federal government and host to thousands of domestic and international travelers each year. The primary industry in the District of Columbia is the federal government, followed by the tourism trade. Trade associations, law, higher education, medical research, government-related research, and publishing are pivotal industries in DC's economy, as well.
