Studying
in the United States offers you many opportunities to expand your
knowledge, but why limit yourself to just one country? U.S. universities and independent companies offer study abroad programs through which students live and learn in countries around the world. You can participate in these programs during traditional school semesters but also during the summer break period, which can run anywhere from late May until early September.
Most universities offer summer courses, but you should also consider study overseas opportunities during the summer break. For sessions from a few weeks to two months, you can go to another country with several other students to learn and experience a different culture. Study abroad trips may involve formal classes at a foreign institution of higher learning or may require students to immerse themselves in the country's culture and complete a project relating to their experiences.
Many study overseas programs offer English-language instruction, though outside of the program activities, the native language of the country dominates. Consider your language skills carefully when choosing a study overseas program.
If your U.S. university does not offer a study overseas program, you can participate in trips organized by other universities and private companies. Study overseas programs will usually give students a transcript for classes taken in the program. If you would like to participate in a program not sponsored by your school, check with your university before registering to see if and how credits will transfer.
Some summer study abroad programs offer more than college credit: real-world work experience. Students can find internships in their field of study (or explore another field) while learning about another culture. Internships are invaluable to students in preparation for their careers. Study abroad internships offer the double benefit of career preparation and broadened cultural horizons.
